Heritage Sweater

Heritage is a boyfriend-style raglan sweater with an oversized, cosy fit, a deep yoke, and extra-long sleeves and body – designed to feel like something borrowed from someone else's wardrobe.

The all-over stranded colourwork pattern is classic in character: rhythmic, easy to memorise, and suited to single-colour or multi-contrast interpretations, though only two colours are ever worked at a time. Originally published in 2021, the design was revamped for 2025 with a broadened and more carefully graded size range, improved construction notes, and an updated yarn recommendation for a lighter, more comfortable finished fabric. The worsted-weight construction in unspun wool produces a fabric with exceptional warmth and a natural, unpretentious texture.

This makes Heritage an excellent choice for knitters new to stranded colourwork who want a long, meditative project with a traditional Norwegian menswear feel. Heritage is one of my most enduring designs – a timeless all-over colourwork raglan that rewards slow, attentive knitting.

Please choose a size 14-24 cm/ 5.5-9.5 in larger than your actual chest circumference. For the best results, please view the table and schematic to review the measurements at other body points. With greater discrepancies in upper chest and full chest measurements, I recommend going with the upper chest measurement. The sample in the photos is size 2 with 22 cm/ 8.75 in positive ease.

You can choose from 9 unisex size-inclusive sizes, with finished chest circumferences of:

95, 106, 116 (127, 138, 145) (155, 166, 176) cm | 37.5, 41.75, 45.75 (50, 54.25, 57) (61, 65.25, 69.25) in

A schematic with comprehensive measurements is included in the knitting pattern.

The provided meterages/ yardages (yds approx. due to rounding) already include a safety margin. However, please note that your individual yarn consumption may vary based on your yarn, gauge, size, and the desired sleeve/body length. It is advisable to get a little more than you think you’ll need.

The meterages listed for each colour separately are higher because I have added a larger safety margin for using multiple colours as opposed to just one. The reason for this is that you may use more or less of each colour depending on their order in the project.
