The Barren Land Sweater is a circular yoke sweater with a relaxed fit, knitted from the top down in the round in worsted weight unspun yarn.

Its colourwork yoke features a minimalist two-colour stranded pattern inspired by the spare, elemental beauty of Icelandic landscapes – volcanic soil, slow glaciers, and vegetation that holds on against all odds. The pattern is clean and geometric, creating a striking visual effect with relatively limited complexity. Worked in Nutiden by Höner och Eir or a comparable unspun lanolin-rich wool, the finished sweater has a warm, natural weight and a slightly rustic character that suits the design's Nordic-inspired aesthetic. The circular yoke construction places the colourwork at the natural focal point of the sweater, with the body and sleeves worked in straightforward stockinette.

This makes Barren Land an approachable colourwork sweater for knitters with some experience knitting in the round – the stranded section is contained and well-charted, offering a satisfying introduction to yoke colourwork without an overwhelming commitment. Please choose a size that is 10-25 cm larger than your actual chest circumference. For reference: the sample in the photos is in size 3 with 19 cm positive ease.
