Fernlys is a top-down circular yoke sweater, worked in the round with a loose, relaxed fit. The name blends the German word for distant and the Norwegian word for light – a combination that captures the sweater's airy, luminous character.

Construction begins with a cast-on at the neck, the ribbing finished with a traditional Estonian braid, before yoke increases are worked from a colourwork chart featuring a minimalist stranded pattern complemented by a textured slipstitch detail. Short-row back shaping adds structure before the sleeves and body are separated, each then worked in smooth stockinette stitch down to the (half)twisted ribbed cuffs and hem, bound off neatly in pattern.

Fernlys is designed specifically for Nutiden unspun wool from Höner och Eir – worked single-stranded for a light, breathable summer-evening garment, or held double for a warmer autumn layer. This versatility makes it a rewarding knit for those already comfortable working with unspun yarns. For knitters interested in exploring stranded colourwork and slipstitch texture in a single project, Fernlys offers an elegant introduction, combining Scandinavian design sensibility with a construction method well-suited to the natural, lanolin-rich qualities of Swedish unspun wool.

For an oversized fit, choose a size 15-25 cm larger than your actual chest circumference, for a relaxed fit - 10-15 cm larger. For reference: the sample in the photos is in size 3 with 19 cm positive ease.

Main colour - Höner och Eir - Nutiden - FLISSELIN - held single - cropped ~ 150, 150, 150 (200, 200, 250) (250, 300, 300) g, regular ~ 200, 200, 200 (250, 250, 300) (300, 350, 350) g.

Held double - cropped 400, 400, 400 (450, 450, 500) (500, 550, 550) g, regular - 450, 450, 450 (500, 500, 550) (550, 600, 600) g. Contrast colour - Höner och Eir - Nutiden - ADEKVAT - held single. You’ll need ~ 20 - 50 g for single strand, ~ 50 - 80 g for double strand. Your individual yarn consumption will vary based on your yarn, gauge, size and the desired sleeve / body length. It is advisable to get a little more than you think you’ll need. Please note that these are estimates.

Yarn Substitutes

Summer version - one strand of unspun yarn (optional: held together with a strand of mohair) e.g. Istex Plötulopi, Wooldreamers Manchelopis.

Autumn version - two strands of unspun yarn held together. Any aran or worsted weight yarn that meets the gauge, e.g. Istex Lettlopi Main colour ~ 850, 950, 1050 (1100, 1150, 1200) (1250, 1300, 1350) m. Contrast colour ~ 50, 50, 50 (75, 75, 75) (100, 100, 100) m.
