Wayfarer Raglan Sweater - Knitting Pattern

The Wayfarer Raglan is the first entry in the Wayfarer Collection — a series of clean, contemporary designs for everyday wear. With its classic raglan silhouette and relaxed fit, it is both a versatile wardrobe staple and an excellent first project for knitters new to seamless top-down construction or to working with unspun yarn. Neck and shoulder shaping are achieved with German short rows, and the yoke is contoured with lifted increases for a balanced, comfortable fit across all sizes.

Originally published in 2023 and fully revised for a 2024 re-release, the updated pattern offers improved size inclusivity with a thorough re-grading, newly added schematics with detailed measurements, and clearer pattern writing and layout for a smoother knitting experience. The revised version has been freshly tech-edited and test-knit, ensuring accuracy and ease of use. It is designed for worsted weight unspun yarn and suits both beginners and experienced knitters looking for a reliable, well-constructed everyday sweater pattern.

The Wayfarer Raglan works beautifully in Nutiden by Höner och Eir, held double for a warm, substantial fabric, and pairs naturally with the Wayfarer Tee for a coordinated layered look. Comprehensive step-by-step instructions cover every stage of the knitting process, from shoulder shaping to sleeve finishing.

This pattern is designed for 12-22 cm/ 4.75-8.75 in of positive ease. With greater discrepancies in upper chest and full chest measurements, I recommend going with the upper chest measurement. The samples in the photos are in size 2, shown with 19 cm/ 7.5 in positive ease.

The provided meterages/ yardages (yds approx. due to rounding) already include a safety margin. However, please note that your individual yarn consumption may vary based on your yarn, gauge, size, and the desired sleeve/body length. It is advisable to get a little more than you think you’ll need.

YARN SUBSTITUTES

Any aran to worsted weight yarn that meets the gauge, unspun yarn held double or a combination of DK + lace weight yarn.

For best results, use lightweight, lofty yarns rather than heavy, dense ones, as the latter may affect both fit and feel.

NEEDLES 

3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.5 mm (US 7) 60-120 cm/ 24-47 in circular needles and/or DPNs.

NOTIONS

Stitch markers, stitch holders, a tapestry needle, measuring tape, and scissors.
