The CHUNKIGAN is a modified drop-shoulder brioche cardigan with a generously oversized fit – a floor-length silhouette for slow mornings and lingering evenings. Knitted with unspun yarn and silk mohair, it creates a fabric that is light yet warm, rustic yet refined. Subtle shaping balances its oversized form, making it both a wearable statement and a piece of comfort.

Also available in German.

This cardigan is designed to be worn with approximately 30–40 cm (11.75–15.75 in) of positive ease for a similarly oversized fit as shown in the design sample. The sample shown in the photos is size 2, worn with 39 cm (15.25 in) of positive ease.

You can choose from 9 size-inclusive sizes, with finished bust circumferences of:

  • 114, 123, 134 [143, 154, 163] {176, 183, 194} cm | 45, 48.5, 52.75 [56.25, 60.75, 64.25] {69, 72, 76.5} in
  • to fit full bust of 74–164 cm | 29.25–60.75 in.

A schematic with comprehensive measurements is included in the knitting pattern and the pattern preview.

The provided meterages/ yardages (yds approx. due to rounding) already include a safety margin. However, please note that your individual yarn consumption may vary based on your yarn, gauge, size, and the desired sleeve/body length. It is advisable to get a little more than you think you’ll need.

YARN SUBSTITUTES
I recommend using lightweight woollen-spun yarns or soft unspun yarns such as Plötulopi by Ístex, Nutiden by Höner och Eir, or Manchelopis by Wooldreamers. These can be held together with a strand of silk mohair, held double, or held single with two strands of silk mohair, depending on the thickness and loft of the yarn.

Unspun yarns vary significantly in thickness across brands and blends. That’s why, if you’re substituting with a thinner unspun yarn like Manchelopis by Wooldreamers, you may need to add a second strand of silk mohair or hold the unspun yarn double to achieve the correct gauge and fabric feel.
If you want to achieve a result close to the original but prefer not to use unspun yarn and silk mohair, look for a yarn that is lightweight, fluffy, and has a noticeable halo. Suitable alternatives include brushed alpaca yarns (e.g. Sandnes Børstet Alpakka, Kaos Yarn Organic Brushed Alpaca) or blown yarns (e.g. CaMaRose Snefnug, Isager Eco Soft). These types of yarns offer a similarly soft and airy feel with good volume and warmth, making them excellent options for oversized garments like this one.

You can also use any other spun yarn that meets gauge, but proceed with caution to fiber composition and character, and keep in mind that different fibers and constructions will affect the final drape, warmth, and overall look of the garment.
