WOLF WINTER is a classic round-yoke sweater knit from the top-down, featuring minimalist stranded colourwork inspired by traditional Nordic designs. What sets it apart is the use of slipped stitches, which not only enhance visual interest and make the colourwork stand out, but also add a playful, engaging detail that brings a delightful ‘just-one-more-row’ appeal to the entire project.

Design inspiration

WOLF WINTER (derived from the Swedish ‘’Vargavinter’’) describes an exceptionally harsh and bitterly cold winter. During such winters, humans, wolves, and other animals alike faced survival challenges and scarcity in the most brutal and prolonged cold seasons.

WOLF WINTER symbolises not only the harshness and brutality of winter and its struggles but also the resilience of animals and humans enduring those challenging times.

This design—and its name—has been in my mind for years. As you can imagine, wolves hold a deeply special meaning for me. I knew this sweater, bearing its evocative name derived from Swedish folklore, would be knit with Swedish yarn—specifically Nutiden unspun yarn from Höner och Eir. I had only been waiting for the perfect colourway. When Höner och Eir released Total Mörker (Total Darkness in Swedish) at the end of 2023, I knew it was the one. This nearly black yarn, with a blue undertone interspersed with pale grey flecks of contrasting yarn, evokes the muted grey-white of snow on an overcast winter day or moonlight on a cold night. The black represents the backdrop of short, dark days, barren earth, and leafless trees, all held in silent, frozen animation.

And while historically both the wolf and long winters had more negative connotations, this sweater—and its name—is my love letter to wolves and to the stark, quiet beauty of a winter landscape.

Please choose a size 6-12 cm/ 2.25-4.75 in larger than your actual chest circumference.
For best results, please refer to the table and schematic (pages 6 and 7 in the pattern or pattern preview) to review the measurements at other body points.

With greater discrepancies in upper chest and full chest measurements, I recommend going with the upper chest measurement. The sample in the photos is in size 2 with 10 cm/ 4 in positive ease.
